In Sicily when spring is in the air, the fragrant lemon blossoms coax the Sicilians to prepare for cooking with lemon. Lemon season inspires not only yummy, but very healthy meals. This citrus brings out the flavor of many foods, for example, fish, lobster, chicken and pork.
Benefits of Lemon
A lemon has an antiseptic quality and provides vitamin C. Back in the 15th and 16th century, sailors used them to treat scurvy (caused by lack of vitamin C) and heal wounds. Lemons are actually used to make medicine for all kinds of ailments nowadays.
No medicine for us, though. Lemon will be our inspiration to cook.
Fun recipe: Each time I had a cold, my mother-in law conjured up a lemon concoction that really worked. Hot tea with about a tbsp of lemon and a shot of whiskey. (I think she used more than a shot.) I felt better immediately, or I was too out of it to know I was sick. I recommend it.
Beyond curing my common cold, lemons are special to me. The flavor was present in many of Mom’s meals. The thought of lemon conjures up sweet memories. My cousin Barb and I would be out together. When we got back to Dot’s kitchen, mom would have tea and lemon tarts waiting for us. Barb and I still talk of those tarts when missing my mom.

Cocktail: Lemon drop martini Lemon Chicken: Get Recipe
Combine 2 shots vodka, 1 1/2 shots of lemon juice, and 1/2 tsp. sugar and pour into a cocktail shaker with ice.
Pour into martini glasses and garnish with lemon slices.
Wine suggestion: Oaken Chardonnay or Chenin Blanc Shop now.
